TREE REPLACEMENT PROGRAM

Trees growing in power lines are the #1 enemy of service reliability. FEC’s Tree Replacement Program (TRP) allows your cooperative to remove trees from its primary and secondary power lines, which could create service reliability problems for FEC.

FEC will replace the tree that is removed from primary or secondary power lines with one of eight trees chosen by the member/owner FREE of charge. The trees will be planted for the member/owner by a professional nursery.

Tree choices include redbud, flowering crabapple, amur maple, Washington hawthorn, green ash, pin oak, chanticleer pear and red maple.

Contact Joe Timmons at 660-646-4281 or 1-800-279-0496 to reserve your new tree. See our Tree Replacement Program flyer from the January, 2008, Rural Missouri magazine. This is a large size PDF file, so please wait for it to download to your computer.

PRESS RELEASE
February, 2008, Rural Missouri special edition

FEC’s Tree Replacement Program Helps to Improve Overall Service Reliability

Farmers’ Electric Cooperative’s Tree Replacement Program (TRP) is starting its 14th year, and it has been a big success in eliminating one of the biggest problems involving ser-vice reliability.

Tree limbs in power lines can cause disruptions in service, including those annoying blinks. Trees that are too close to power lines also create a potential problem when ice storms cross the area. The weight of the ice on the limbs can cause the limbs to drop onto power lines that are already stretched to capacity. Plus, trees can fall through power lines, which takes even longer to repair and to restore service.

The TRP allows FEC to remove a tree near a primary service. A new tree is planted away from the power lines in the area, by a professional, at no cost to the member. Members have a variety of trees to choose from. This helps to eliminate amajor service reliability problem.

Contact Joe Timmons at 660-646-4281 or 1-800-279-0496 to reserve your new tree. See our Tree Replacement Program flyer from the January, 2008, Rural Missouri magazine. This is a large size PDF file, so please wait for it to download to your computer.

ENERGY INFORMATION

Associated's coal-based units are the foundation for providing low-cost energy to member systems. The cooperative's owned and contracted coal-based resources make up 53 percent of capacity but produce about 85 percent of Associated's energy. In 2004 alone, the cooperative's New Madrid and Thomas Hill coal units produced 15.2 million megawatt-hours for member systems. Associated employees continue to improve the maintenance and operation of these coal units, constructed from 1966 to 1982. These units have been generating at sustained, elevated levels since they were converted to burn low-sulfur coal in 1994.

In recent years, Associated has diversified its generation mix, building 1,633 megawatts of gas-based generation from 1999 to 2002. Those resources, which provide intermediate and peaking power, have enabled the cooperative to meet members' growing load demand. Associated's combined-cycle units, which use heat from the exhaust of the gas turbines to produce steam for additional energy generation, are among the nation's most efficient and clean burning.
