A Simple Watt Meter Allows You to Understand Usage It's not always easy to save energy, especially if you don't know how much electricity each of your appliances uses every month. With a small investment of less than $40 you can purchase a watt meter that will provide you with specific information as to how much each of your appliances is using when it is turned on and, surprisingly, how much it is using when it is turned off. Some of the watt meters can even tell you how much energy that appliance will use in a day, month, or year, and convert that usage into dollars and cents. Try the watt meter on your large appliances. Try them on your small appliances. You can even use the watt meter to teach your children how much energy AND money they are wasting when they leave the lights on in an empty room. There is a group of energy wasters known as "Phantom Loads" that use more power than previously thought. It is now estimated by the Department of Energy that approximately 15%of every electric bill is the result of a phantom load. A cell phone charger that is plugged in but not charging a phone is using power. By using the watt meter you can determine how much money you are wasting and take action. |
