Help Us Help Area Families; Sign Up for Operation Round Up
October, 2008
Mike Sanders, FEC CEO

Last year in this column, I wrote about the Seven Cooperative Principles that guide our business. The seventh principle is "Concern for Community". Farmers' Electric is committed to this principle and strives to make life better for the people that live in the counties that we serve.

We have recently completed our 16th annual Area Youth Benefit Fund (AYBF) fund raisers. These events are a dinner/auction and a golf tournament. After all the bills are paid, we estimate that we will raise about $32,000 for our charity through those two events. All of the money that is raised for the charity is used to pay medical bills for children 18 years of age and younger in our nine-county service area. The children's families do not have to be members of Farmers' Electric. To request assistance, the family must complete an application form and return it to Farmers' Electric. The AYBF board then reviews the applications and awards the funds based on need.

The board is made up of three people living in our nine-county service area, and none of them are FEC employees or FEC directors. These people receive no compensation for the considerable amount of time they spend on this board, and we appreciate their efforts and dedication.

We have recently started another program that will raise more money for the AYBF. This is Operation Round Up, and all members of Farmers' Electric can participate in this program. Each month your electric bill would be "rounded up" to the next highest dollar amount, and the extra amount will be donated to AYBF. The average annual contribution to this would be $6.00 per account, with $0.12 being the minimum annual contribution and $11.88 being the maximum annual contribution. So for just pennies a month, you and other FEC members can make a huge difference in the lives of children living in our area.

I have been here for only four years, and each year I am amazed by the support and generosity of our communities in supporting the fund raisers for this charity. I worked at another cooperative that had "Operation Round Up", and was surprised by the dollars that were generated simply by having enough members donate a few cents every month.

If you haven't already done so, I ask you to please consider signing up for Operation Round Up. To date, the AYBF has donated nearly $400,000 to over 300 area families. With your participation in Operation Round Up we can help many more families. Please write, call, or come into our office and we will get you signed up.
