Lighting Program Saves Money North Daviess R-3 school district received a rebate check from FEC totaling $5,787 after it completed a lighting replacement program at the school. Farmers' Electric Cooperative, along with its power supplier, Associated Electric Cooperative, Springfield, now have rebate programs available to help members improve the lighting efficiency of businesses and schools. "Businesses may be spending much more than needed to effectively light their facilities," said Joe Hardie, Member Services Representative with FEC. "Significant cost savings can be achieved with energy-efficiency improvements." "Due to continually improving technology," added Hardie, "lighting usually provides the highest return-on-investment of major upgrades." With proper design, lighting energy use in most buildings can be cut in half, while maintaining or improving lighting quality, Hardie said. Such designs typically pay for themselves in energy savings alone within a few years, and they offer more benefits in terms of the potential for smaller and less costly cooling systems and more productive work environments, said Hardie. "Combine this with the rebates you can receive from your cooperative and you can save even more,” Hardie said. Schools, nursing homes, warehouses, industrial, and barns can all benefit from the business lighting program. Hardie said there was a 10-fixture minimum to qualify for the rebate. FEC also has rebates for residential members, including dual fuel, geothermal, Energy Star dishwashers and clothes washers.
