CFL Light Bulb Swap Program to Change March 1, 2009

Farmers’ Electric’s Light Bulb Swap Program will be changing effective March 1. The program is being altered as a result of Associated Electric Cooperative (AECI) changing its program. AECI is providing its rural electric cooperative owners with the CFL bulbs. For 2009, AECI has lowered the number of bulbs available to each cooperative. AECI has also announced they will lower the number of bulbs available to FEC and the other electric cooperatives they serve in 2010, as well.

Beginning March 1, FEC members may swap six incandescent light bulbs for six Energy Star compact fluorescent light bulbs. This Light Bulb Swap Program will last until FEC runs out of the CFL bulbs. “We apologize to our members for this unexpected change,” said Steve Shoot, Manager of Member Services. “ We were under the impression that the 2008 program would be continued without change in 2009. We didn’t receive notice of the change in the program from our power supplier until the end of the year.” Shoot said members would still receive free CFL bulbs, plus additional gifts when they registered at the cooperative’s Annual Meeting June 9 in Chillicothe.

A total of 1,336 Farmers’ Electric members took part in the cooperative’s Light Bulb Swap program in 2008, receiving 20,352 com-pact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs in return.

The Light Bulb Swap program included FEC employees traveling to Pattonsburg, Lake Viking, Carrollton, Brookfield, Brunswick, Knoxville and Cameron to trade CFL’s with members for their inefficient incandescent light bulbs.

CFL’s use about one-fourth the energy of a regular incandescent light bulb and last much longer, too.

Members can still swap 12 incandescent light bulbs for 12 CFL bulbs, with the opportunity to receive additional CFL’s free by taking part in several voluntary programs, including Operation Round Up. FEC members who took part in the program in 2008 may again swap up to 12 more bulbs in 2009. FEC employees will also be back on the road again in a number of rural locations after the winter season is concluded to continue the Light Bulb Swap program. The dates, locations and times are yet to be determined but they will be announced in future editions of FEC’s Watts Up. Members may also swap their light bulbs at the FEC office in Chillicothe, which is open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Members of Farmers’ Electric Cooperative will have an opportunity to save money on their monthly electric bills by taking advantage of a new program at no cost to them.

“If Farmers’ Electric members have been waiting until their old incandescent light bulbs finally burn out to replace them with the more efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, then they no longer have an excuse,” said Steve Shoot, Manager of Member Services for FEC.

Beginning August 1, Farmers’ Electric will swap light bulbs with FEC members...free. FEC members will be allowed to swap their old inefficient light bulbs for Energy Star CFL bulbs.

Each member will be allowed to swap up to 12 incandescent light bulbs for 12 CFL bulbs. Plus, if the member signs up for Operation Round Up they will receive another three-pack of CFL’s. If members also sign up for “Our Energy, Our Future,” they will receive an additional three-pack of CFL bulbs. Initially, members will have to travel to the FEC office in Chillicothe to swap their light bulbs. However, employees are already making plans to take this light bulb swap on the road to make it more convenient for FEC members.

Plans are to meet with FEC members at Pattonsburg, Lake Viking, Carrollton, Richmond, Brookfield and Brunswick. Details pertaining to the dates, times and locations will be published in the September edition of Watts Up in the Rural Missouri magazine. Members will have the choice of CFL’s that are 60-watt equivalent, 75-watt equivalent and 100-watt equivalent. Canned CFL lights will also be available.

For a member to complete the swap, they must bring either a Rural Missouri magazine that shows their address label and a photo ID, a recent bill with a photo ID, or their Co-op Connections card and a photo ID.

The light bulb swap is being sponsored by Associated Electric Cooperative, Inc., Springfield, FEC’s power provider. AECI and Farmers’ Electric Cooperative are committed to helping rural electric cooperative members residing within its distribution system become more energy efficient at their residences and businesses.

FEC employees will also be providing information to members at the light bulb swaps on a variety of additional topics, including heating and cooling, water heating, The Switch Team, Operation Round Up, the Tree Replacement Program and much more.

Employees at the Chillicothe office will also continue to swap light bulbs with members. Just drop by between the hours of 7:30a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
