Don't Let the Cool Air in Your House Go to Waste
August, 2007, Rural Missouri Back Page

The summer months can be a drain on your wallet, as the higher temperatures outside attempt to worm their way into the cool confines of your home. Hot, humid air can leak into your home while the expensive cool air leaks out. One of the quickest and cheapest ways to keep the hot air out and the cool air in is to caulk, seal and weather strip all seams, cracks and openings to the outside of your home.

Here are some more tips for making the most of your air conditioning this summer:

  • Experiment with your thermostat and set it as high as it is comfortable. You shouldn’t have to wear a sweater indoors in the middle of summer.
  • Use ventilation fans only as needed.
  • Close off unoccupied or unused rooms.
  • Keep closet doors closed. Cooling these spaces is wasteful.
  • Use an interior fan in conjunction with your window air conditioner to spread the cooled air more effectively through your home without greatly increasing your power use.
  • Don’t place lamps or TV sets near the thermostat. The thermostat senses heat and causes the air conditioner to run longer.
