Member-owners of Farmers’ Electric Cooperative will be getting something quite unique when they attend the cooperative’s Annual Meeting on June 5. Each member who registers will receive a hardbound copy of the cooperative’s history, entitled “Rural Wonder, a History of Farmers' Electric Cooperative, 1938-2007.”

“The overall process in putting our history together took about 18 months,” said FEC CEO Mike Sanders. “We couldn’t have completed this project without the assistance of our members and our current and retired employees. There were so many years and so much information to research.”
The book was written by Jim McCarty, Editor of Rural Missouri magazine. For McCarty this is the third book he has written. McCarty has also written books on the history of Howard Electric Cooperative and Callaway Electric Cooperative, both Missouri cooperatives. The Member Services Department of Farmers’ Electric coordinated the history book project.

The 111-page book, which is written in chronological order, is filled with stories and photographs dating back to the creation of the Farmers Electric to current times. “Our Board of Directors felt it was important to have this book completed while we still had members and retired employees who could provide us with the stories and photographs,” Sanders said. “If we waited too long we would have probably lost many, many valuable resources and the book would not have been as accurate and as interesting.”

Sanders said the cooperative would be donating copies of its history to all 34 school districts in its service territory, as well as any public libraries located within the nine counties Farmers’ Electric serves. Copies of the book will be available for purchase following the June 5 Annual Meeting of the cooperative.
