Win Trips to Washington, D.C. Chillicothe, Gallatin students win FEC's 47th annual essay contest
Drew Jones of Chillicothe and Breanne Brammer of Gallatin won trips to Washington, D.C. courtesy of Farmers' Electric Cooperative. Jones, a junior at Chillicothe High School, and Brammer, a junior at Gallatin High School, wrote the top two essays in the cooperative's 47th Annual Youth Tour to Washington essay contest. The high school students were chosen by a trio of judges out of 44 essays that were submitted by the February 26 deadline. Jones is the son of Kristie Cross and Andy Jones. Brammer is the daughter of Kim and Dennis Brammer. The junior class essay topic was "If signed into law, how will the cap and trade legislation now in Congress impact rural Missouri?" Jones and Brammer left for Washington, D.C. with other essay contest winners on June 12 and returned June 17. The annual essay contest in 2010 also featured a new competition for members of the sophomore class. The top four sophomore essayists won a trip to the Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (C.Y.C.L.E.) in Jefferson City. The event is organized and sponsored by the Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives, which is based in Missouri's capitol city. The sophomore winners were T.J Schieber, Penney High School, Hamilton; Austin Chase, Hardin-Central High School; Elizabeth Sivill and Margaret Weed, both of Chillicothe High School. The sophomore class essay topic was "What can homeowners do to become more energy efficient?" Schieber is the son of Tim and Traci Schieber, Hamilton; Chase is the son of Kimberly Chase, Hardin; Sivill is the daughter of Gary and Jayne Sivill, Chillicothe; and, Weed is the daughter of Frank Weed, Chillicothe. The C.Y.C.L.E Conference will be held in July. The topics and entry forms for the annual contest are mailed to every Junior class and Sophomore class instructor in late December. The deadline to have the essay entered into the contest is the last Friday of February. The number of essays entered in the contest for 2010 was the largest in nearly 10 years. Twenty- six high schools received the essay contest information. FEC provides transportation to and from Jefferson City where the winners to Washington meet with other fellow contestants from Missouri's participating cooperatives. Transportation is also provided to and from the C.Y.C.L.E conference, as well. "One of the highlights of our year is when we get to reward academic excellence with these unique trips and conferences," said Steve Shoot, manager of member services for FEC. FEC

Annual Essay Contest to Washington, D.C., C.Y.C.L.E. The contest is open to all high school sophomores and juniors attending a high school that is located within the service area of Farmers’ Electric Cooperative. The contest is also open to a high school sophomore or junior who resides in a home on Farmers’ Electric lines and attends a high school outside the Cooperative’s service area, where the Youth Tour to Washington Contest is not offered at that high school. Students in this category must add the parents Farmers’ Electric Account Number on the entry form. The contest is not open to a student who attends a high school in Farmers’ Electric Cooperative’s service area, but resides on another cooperative’s lines that also conducts the Youth Tour to Washington Essay Contest. This student must enter his/her cooperative’s Essay Contest. Children of FEC employees and directors are not eligible. Submit a typed essay, 250-600 words in length on the following topic:
You are not limited to any resource materials supplied by Farmers’ Electric Cooperative. Your essay, if you wish, may include interviews with individuals involved in the energy field. Use ONLY the main subject title on your essay. Essays must be in the Cooperative office or postmarked not later than 4:30 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2010. Our address is: Farmers’ Electric Cooperative, ATTN: Steve, P.O. Box 680, Chillicothe, MO 64601. A judging committee will select the three finalists from the essays submitted. The essays will be judged on the following basis: A) Understanding of the Subject 35% Two Junior class finalists will be chosen by a panel of judges for the trip to Washington, D.C. Four Sophomore class finalists will be chosen for the C.Y.C.L.E. conference in Jefferson City. The winners will be announced no later than the first week of April. Theses are all-expense paid trips provided by Farmers’ Electric Cooperative. Farmers’ Electric will provide all transportation, including the picking up and returning the student to his or her residence. Students will be picked up the afternoon of June 13 and returned to their home the evening of June 19. |
