Three area high school juniors will win all-expense paid trips to Washington, D.C., this summer as part of Farmers' Electric's Youth Tour to Washington Essay Contest. Three area high school juniors will also win all-expense paid trips to the Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (C.Y.C.L.E.) this July in Jefferson City. This marks the 46th consecutive year that FEC has sponsored this academic competition.

The 2008 winners of the trip to Washington, D.C., were April Kiehl, Meadville High School, Parker Leatherman, Chillicothe High School, and Cody Pieper, Stet High School. “We normally only have 25 to 35 entries in our contest each year,” said Steve Shoot, Manager of Member Services for FEC. “This is a great opportunity for a student to win an all expense paid trip."

Essays should be 250 to 600 words in length. They will be graded on the understanding of the subject, originality, adhering to the topic, composition, neatness and grammar.

The essay contest is open to all high school juniors attending a high school that is located within the service area of FEC. The contest is also open to a high school junior who resides in a home on FEC's system and attends a high school outside the cooperative's service territory where the essay contest is not offered at that high school. The contest is not open to a student who resides in a home outside of the cooperative's service territory and attends a school locatedw ithin FEC's service territory. Children of cooperative employees and directors are not eligible to participate in the contest.

Junior class English instructors received the essay contest information and applications in late December. Applications may also be picked up at the cooperative office in Chillicothe or by calling the office and the application will be mailed directly to the home of the student. Applications may also be found by clicking on the link below.

This year's topic is “What can you do to make your home more energy efficient?” The essay contest deadline is Friday, February 27, 2009, at 4:30 p.m. Essays must be mailed and stamped at the post before the deadline listed above.
