Proposed legislation would raise electric rates significantly if approved by Congress

In the rush to show how “green” they are during an election year, politicians are attempting to push legislation through Congress that would have a devastating impact on everyone’s monthly electric bill. There are several pieces of legislation that if approved, as written, would impact rates between 80 to 250 percent.

Rural electric cooperatives across the country have joined together promoting “Our Energy, Our Future,” a common sense approach to energy management instead of what is being proposed by politicians in Washington, D.C. “The proposed legislation doesn’t deal with the problems electric utilities will be facing in the not-too-distant future, ” said Mike Sanders, FEC CEO. “For example, the cooperatives in Missouri are growing at a rate of about two to three percent a year. Renewable energy sources, such as wind energy, will not be able to provide all of the power we will need in the future.

”Members can still play an important role by contacting their representatives and senators. Members attending the June 10 annual meeting signed letters that were forwarded to Washington, D.C. asking the following three questions:

1) Experts say that our nation’s growing electricity needs will soon go well beyond what renewable energy, conservation and efficiency can provide. What is your plan to make sure we have the electricity we’ll need?

2) What are you doing to fund research required to make emissions-free electric plants a reality?

3) Balancing electricity needs and environmental goals will be difficult. How much is all this going to increase my electric bill and what will you do to make it affordable?

Copies of these letters are available at the front desk at our office in Chillicothe. As a member of the cooperative, you may also use an easy e-mail form on www.ourenergy.coop to contact your legislators.
