December and January Much Colder Than Average
The first month of the new year is the coldest January in 25 years
March, 2010

The winter of 2009-2010 has left in its path deep, drifting snowfalls and arctic cold temperatures that haven't been seen in 25 years. Farmers' Electric Cooperative keeps a record of daily high and low temperatures. According to FEC weather records, January of 2010 was the coldest first month of the year since January of 1985. "We had an extremely unusual cold streak that lasted nearly three weeks at the first of the billing period," said Steve Shoot, Manager of Member Services for FEC. "This resulted in many higher than average utility bills."

Beginning Christmas day last year, the daytime high temperature only made it above freezing one time over a 19 consecutive day period. On December 30, the temperature climbed to a high of 34 degrees for a couple of hours before dropping to an overnight low of five degrees the next morning.

The January billing period actually ran from December 24 through January 24. In that span of time, there were seven mornings when the temperatures plummeted to zero or below zero temperatures. There were also eight mornings when the overnight low was in single digits. The lowest recorded temperature in January was a minus 13 below zero on January 9. Ironically, the daytime high for that date was 13 above. Toward the end of January, temperatures were also dropping into single digit overnight lows. "The extreme temperatures left an impression on our members," Shoot said. "We have had a number of calls about our department performing energy audits on homes, as well as rebate information on new, efficient heating systems."
