Helping Area Families
A check for $5,647 was presented to Shanelle Varone, far right, Director of Major Gifts for Children's Mercy Hospital (CMH) by, from left, Steve Shoot, AYBF coordinator, Mary Tyrrell, AYBF Board of Director, and Mike Sanders, FEC CEO. The donation was presented at the AYBF dinner-auction August 8. With this presentation, the AYBF has now donated $500,000 to pay medical bills for area children. Any donation to CMH is used to pay medical bills in the nine counties where FEC provides electrical service. To date, over 470 families have received donations through the AYBF. Many more have been helped through donations to CMH. AYBF Auction
Raises $40,575 A guitar signed by musician Eric Clapton was auctioned off at Sunday night's 19th annual FEC AYBF live auction. Col. Mike Miller, auctioneer, called out "sold" with a bid of $1200. The guitar was one of the main items on the auction block. The 19th Annual Area Youth Benefit Fund Dinner-Auction and Golf Tournament had a goal to raise over $40,000 this year, and through the generosity of many, surpassed that goal.
Chillicothe's Elks Lodge hosted the Sunday dinner-auction, and Green Hills Golf Course hosted the tournament. A check was presented to Shanelle Varone, Managing Director of Major Gifts at Children's Mercy on behalf of FEC AYBF in the amount of $5,647.52, bringing the total to an even half million in donations made by the organization. President Mike Sanders, Steve Shoot, and board member Mary Tyrrell presented Varone with the check. The fund-raising continued Monday morning at the Green Hills Golf Course. There were 73 three-member teams participating in the Pepsi-Cola Bottling-sponsored golf tournament. The groups, Shoot said, were split into morning and afternoon flights. As of Monday morning, including money raised from the golf tournament, the annual benefit has generated $40,575. Operation Roundup, a program through FEC with 1,154 members, generated $6,000. The main auction raised $16,625, $3,150 of that was for two V.I.P. passes to one day at the 2012 Masters Golf Tournament, which was the highest bid item. The three levels of the silent auction raised a combine $5,288. Other items that sold included an electric guitar signed by musician Eric Clapton that went for $1,200, a signed Eagles' album cover that sold for $950, and a signed Harry Potter poster, which went for $500. In 1993, Farmers' Electric established the Area Youth Benefit Fund, a 501(c)3 charity to provide financial assistance toward the payment of medical bills for children 18 years of age and under. The fund is designed to assist families with children who have been ill or injured in which the parents do not have enough money or health insurance to cover the medical costs. The fund primarily operates in the counties of Caldwell, Carroll, Chariton, Clinton, Davies, DeKalb, Linn, Livingston and Ray. A family who is a member of FEC, but resides in a county not listed above, is also eligible for AYBF assistance. A family that resides in the counties listed above does not have to be a member of the cooperative to receive financial assistance. The AYBF raises funds through a dinner-auction and the golf tournament, as well as through Operation Round Up. Over 1,000 FEC members are currently participating in Operation Round Up, in which their monthly bill is "rounded up" to the nearest dollar. That remaining amount is, in turn, placed in the AYBF account. Area Youth Benefit Fund

The 19th Annual Area Youth Benefit Fund (AYBF) dinner-auction and golf tournament will be held August 7-8, with the goal to raise over $40,000 in 2011. In 1993, Farmers' Electric established the AYBF for the purpose of providing financial assistance toward the payment of medical bills for children 18 years of age and under. The fund is designed to assist families with children who have been ill or injured in which the parents do not have enough money or health insurance to cover the medical costs. The dinner-auction will be held at the Chillicothe Elks Lodge on Sunday, August 7. A reception will begin that evening at 5 p.m. with a ribeye steak dinner to follow at 6 o'clock. A number of silent auctions will be held throughout the reception and the dinner. At approximately 7:15 p.m., the main auction will be called by Col. Mike Miller. Tickets are currently being sold by AYBF committee members and a couple of local school organizations. Dinner ticket prices remain the same as they were in 1993 at $25. A "Pick-A-Trip" contest is also being conducted by the AYBF in which the lucky winner will have their choice of a trip for two adults and two children to Disney World, or a one-week stay in Cancun, Mexico, or a seven-night western Caribbean cruise for two. All trips include airfare and lodging. The golf tournament will be held Monday, August 8, at the Green Hills Golf Course. For the 13th consecutive year, Pepsi-Cola Bottling of Chillicothe will be co-sponsoring the AYBF golf tournament. "We can't thank Mike Baker and Donnie Moxley of Pepsi-Cola Bottling enough for all of their support over the years," said Steve Shoot, Manager of Member Services for FEC and coordinator of the AYBF events. "Their continued sponsorship and donations help make it possible for us to conduct successful fund raising events every year for the kids in this area." Every golfer who plays in the tournament will receive a free pair of Footjoy golf shoes, a sleeve of golf balls and more. Golfers are automatically entered at no extra cost with mulligans and a chance to win "skins." Corporate sponsor golf teams also receive three banquet tickets, plus recognition at the dinner-auction, golf tournament and on the cooperative website. Regular golf teams are $300, while corporate sponsor golf teams are $375. A wide variety of items will be sold in the silent auctions. There will be a regular Silent Auction, Super Silent auction and a Super Duper silent auction, each with a different minimum bid. "If anyone would like to make a donation to our charity event, please call us here at theFEC office," said Shoot. "The AYBF is a 501(c)3 charity so any and all donations to the AYBF are tax deductible." Shoot said committee members would gladly pick up any donations to save members travel time and expense to Chillicothe. "We just need a little notice to make the arrangements to pick up the item or items." Main auction items this year include a week-long stay at a suite in Siesta Key, Florida; a shadowbox with a signed Zach Greinke dugout jacket and baseball; two passes to one day at the 2012 Masters Golf Tournament, in Augusta, Georgia; four tickets to the Missouri-Kansas Border War football game; Waterford Crystal; diamond jewelry; limited edition art prints and more. To date, the AYBF has donated $494,352 to 471 families. The fund primarily operates in the counties of Caldwell, Carroll, Chariton, Clinton, Daviess, DeKalb, Linn, Livingston and Ray. A family who receives electricity from Farmers' Electric Cooperative, but resides in a county not listed above also qualifies for AYBF assistance. A family that resides in the counties listed above does not have to be a member of the cooperative to receive financial assistance.
