An estimated 850 people of all ages attended the 71st annual meeting of Farmers’ Electric Cooperative Tuesday evening at Gary Dickinson Performing Arts Center in Chillicothe. The 510 member-owners of Farmers’ Electric who were in attendance re-elected three members to the cooperative’s board of directors, heard reports on the cooperative’s activities in the previous year, as well as information about several programs offered by the cooperative. He said Americans have their first black president, are experiencing the worst recession in decades, are seeing high unemployment rates, are witnessing the auto industry in bankruptcy and are watching their retirement accounts melt away. “Is there anything positive,” he questioned the audience. “There is a lot of serious stuff going on but there is a lot that is good going on,” he said. He said interest rates are extremely low, farmland values are high, commodity prices are high and he predicted that the auto industry will emerge from bankruptcy stronger and better than before. “There are problems in certain areas, but they are on the road to recovery,” Cornett said. “Our economy will recover.” Cornett reflected on the status of Farmers Electric Cooperative and noted that while rates are low, they will increase. 71st Annual Meeting of Farmers’ Electric Cooperative “We will be covering several topics at this year’s annual meeting, including a discussion on electric rates, plus the ‘Our Energy, Our Future’ campaign,” said Mike Sanders, Farmers’ Electric CEO. “There is additional information our members need to be aware of pertaining to national legislation that would have a significant impact on their monthly bill should it be approved by Congress and signed into law by the President.” Registration for the annual meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Board President Ron Cornett will call the meeting to order at 7 o’clock.
