Dinner and Auctions Raise Over $26,800 Monday, August 14, 2006
C-T Photo by Laura Schuler A large crowd attended the 14th-annual Farmers' Electric Cooperative Area Youth Benefit Fund dinner and auction last (Sunday) evening at the Chillicothe Elks Lodge and organizers say the fund-raiser, which continued with a golf tournament today (Monday), would fall shy of last year's record-setting tally. All funds raised will assist area families of children with medical conditions. Specifically, organizers were expecting around $35,000 to be raised - shy of last year's record-setting $36,475 total. Steve Shoot, FEC member services manager, reported that last night's main auction, which featured around 36 items, helped boost those numbers with $11,615 raised. “We had a nice turnout and it was a very enjoyable evening,” Shoot, the event coordinator, said this (Monday) morning. The funds raised from Sunday's dinner, main auction and silent auction totaled $26,800. There were approximately 35 items in the main auction which featured a variety of goods and services. Col Lonnie Sewell called the auction in front of over 260 community members who participated in the event. An autographed enlarged photograph of Hank Aaron hitting his 715th home run in 1974, breaking Babe Ruth's all-time major league baseball record of 714, brought in $700 - the most of any item in the main auction. The Area Youth Benefit Fund was established in 1993 as a means to assist local and area families whose children are suffering from medical conditions. So far, the fund has distributed over $334,000 in donations to local and area families in need, cooperative officials reported. FEC’s 14th Annual
Area Youth Benefit Fund events are set for August 13-14, 2006 The 14th annual Farmers’ Electric Area Youth Benefit Fund (AYBF) dinner-auction and golf tournament will be held August 13-14, respectively, in Chillicothe.
Farmers’ Electric founded the AYBF in 1993 for the purpose of providing financial assistance toward the payment of medical bills for children 18 years of age and under. The fund is designed to assist families with children who have been ill or injured, in which the parents do not have enough money or health insurance to cover the medical expenses. “As we head into our next fundraising events, the AYBF has distributed just over $340,000 to families in this area,” said Mike Sanders, Chief Executive Officer of FEC. “Weexpect to net around $35,000 again this year from the dinner-auction and the golf tournament.” The AYBF operates primarily in the counties of Linn, Chariton, Livingston, Carroll, Ray, Caldwell, Daviess, DeKalb and Clinton. A family that resides in the counties listed does not have to be a member of the cooperative to receive financial assistance, but they have to live within the outer boundaries of FEC’s service territory. The dinner-auction will be held at the Chillicothe Elks Lodge and will include a number of silent auctions, as well as a main auction under the call of Col. Lonnie Sewell. The reception begins at 5 p.m., followed by the dinner at 6:30 and the main auction will begin around 7:40.Items on the main auction will include Waterford crystal, limited edition art prints, antiques, thousands of dollars in gift certificates, jewelry, collector’s sports memorabilia and much, much more. Banquet ticket prices remain the same at $25. Pork loin for the meal is being donated by Premium Standard Farms. The golf tournament on August 14 will again be held at the Green Hills Golf Course, in Chillicothe. For the eighth consecutive year Pepsi-Cola Bottling of Chillicothe is co-sponsoring the tournament, which has sold out three of the last four years, is a three-person scramble with prizes on every hole, including a $10,000 hole-in-one prize. Prizes are presented to the top three winners in each flight. Each player taking part in the tourney this year will receive a free pair of Footjoy golf shoes, plus a GearFor Sports golf shirt, as well as other items when they register. Morning tee time is 7:30 a.m. while the afternoon tee time is 1:30 p.m. Lunch is being catered by Hy-Vee Food Store of Chillicothe. “By the second week of July we had about 65 percent of the tournament sold out, so if you are interested in playing this year please make your arrangements as soon as possible,” said Sanders. |
